Project Overview & Scope
The Brief
This Mt Annan home was a typical 1990s build that had been gradually modernised over time — with the kitchen left as the final and most daunting piece of the puzzle. After years of living with a dysfunctional layout, the space had become so frustrating that Kylie and her family struggled to see its potential at all.
Storage was limited and awkward, bench space was insufficient, and appliances no longer functioned — including a non-working oven. Entertaining felt uncomfortable and embarrassing, and the thought of renovating the kitchen felt just as overwhelming as continuing to live with it.
Kylie’s back issues were also a key consideration, making reduced bending and improved ergonomics an important part of the brief.
The Solution
Our role was to simplify the process and guide the family through what initially felt like an overwhelming decision. We began by developing two strong design concepts, each addressing the functional issues in different ways. Through collaborative discussions, we helped narrow the direction by focusing on what felt most aligned with how the family lived, cooked, and entertained.
The final design prioritised improved storage, generous bench space, integrated waste solutions, and ergonomic upgrades that reduced bending wherever possible. Strategic design decisions allowed Kylie and her family to invest in key features that would have the greatest day-to-day impact, while keeping the overall project grounded and achievable.
The Design Stage – The CBRS Advantage
The design balances timeless style with practical family living. Shaker-profile cabinetry in a soft polyurethane finish provides character and warmth, while beautifully complementing the rest of the home.
A classic white subway tile splashback was selected to tie in seamlessly with the home’s updated bathrooms, creating visual continuity throughout the house. Thicker 40mm benchtops were chosen to add durability and a sense of quality, while brushed nickel tapware and handles echo other metal finishes within the home.
One of the most transformative features is the gas-lift servery window with a dedicated bench to the outdoor BBQ area. This addition completely changed how the kitchen connects to the backyard, making entertaining easier and strengthening the sense of connection between indoor and outdoor spaces.

We just wanted to say a huge thank you to CBRS for the amazing job they did with our kitchen!
We had previously used CBRS for our two bathrooms and laundry, and we were so impressed with their work that when it came time to update our kitchen, we were really hoping they’d start offering kitchen renovations too. We were thrilled when they did!
